Jesy Nelson has announced she will open up about her experiences with online bullying in the new BBC Three documentary
A new documentary has been announced, featuring Little Mix singer Jesy Nelson. Focusing on the issues young people face today, including social media, body image expectations, and online trolling, Jesy is expected to share her own personal experiences.
Since the group formed in 2011 on The X Factor, Jesy has been vocal about her struggles with online bullying. Over the past year, it was revealed she has been the target of continued online trolling since the group first formed.
The new BBC documentary is expected to look at issues surrounding body image, mental health, and young people in the digital age. Looking at how young people are growing up in a social media-fuelled age of body-shaming, selfies, and trolling, the show is expected to look at the impact these all have on mental health.
Jesy shared the news of her part in the upcoming documentary through Instagram.
Explaining how she will tell her personal story within the documentary, Jesy said:
“Mental health awareness is something we should all be talking about more. Having suffered myself, I decided I want to do something about it.
“I am making a film with the BBC and it's a subject that's really, really close to my heart and it's about mental health awareness.
“One in four men and women suffer from mental health and it's a subject that I personally think we don't speak about enough, and I'm making this film because I really, really want to make a change to other people's lives.”
The Controller of BBC Three, Fiona Campbell, commented:
“BBC Three has a rich history of delivering impactful films and we’re really pleased that we can provide a platform for Jesy to tell her story. As a young female in a successful girl band where intense scrutiny from the public is the norm, Jesy offers a unique perspective on the impact social media can have on an individual and their mental health. It promises to be an eye-opening watch, full of universal themes which will no doubt resonate with our audience.”
Head of Commissioning, Popular Factual and Factual Entertainment at the BBC, David Brindley said:
“We’re delighted to be working with Jesy on what promises to be a very personal film. We hope her encounters whilst making the documentary will be helpful both to her and millions of others around the country who are going through similar experiences.”
This announcement comes days after fellow bandmate Leigh-Anne Pinnock opened up about how she has been dealing with negative and racist comments on Twitter since the group’s early days, but now feels “so much stronger” than she did before.
Little Mix fans have taken to Twitter to support the band's recent awareness movements around mental health, LGBT rights, breast cancer, and racism.
The documentary will premiere exclusively on BBC Three before later airing on BBC One. More details about the release date are expected to follow.
