Cosy cardio is the exercise trend that's putting a different spin on traditional cardio workouts but what are the benefits and can it improve your relationship with exercise?

As the name implies, cosy cardio is all about creating a relaxing environment in order to perform a gentle cardio workout. It all started on social media when content creator Hope Zuckerbrow recorded herself one morning in her pyjamas, coffee in hand and her favourite candle lit while walking on a walking pad and watching her favourite TV show. Since she began posting her cosy cardio content has received over 2 million views, inspiring others to join the trend.

“Society puts so much pressure on women to look a certain way, and because of that, a lot of them have turned exercise into a punishment,” she said in a recent video. Creating a relaxing ritual around her workout has helped Zuckerbrow enjoy being active – for her, cosy cardio has become a form of “meditational self-love.”

Examples of cosy cardio activities include leisurely walking on a treadmill, dancing to your favourite music, light cycling on a stationary bike, or following along with a low-impact aerobics or dance video. The key is to find an activity that you enjoy and can easily integrate into your daily routine.

What are the benefits of cosy cardio?

Gentler on your body

Cosy cardio exercises are typically low-impact and put less stress on your joints than high-impact activities like running or jumping. As a result, this is ideal for those suffering from joint pain or injuries, as well as newcomers who are hesitant to begin with more intense workouts.

Less pressure

At the best of times, the gym can feel intimidating, the thought of all eyes on you, fear of being judged on technique, and feeling overwhelmed at the idea of using equipment when surrounded by more experienced gym-goers. Cosy cardio allows you to set your own pace and intensity, creating a more comfortable and less intimidating experience.

More control

With cosy cardio, you can create a workout space that feels safe and comfortable. This might include setting up in a quiet room, adjusting the temperature, playing your favourite music, or even watching a TV show while you exercise. This control can make the experience more enjoyable and less daunting.

Accessibility and flexibility

Cosy cardio not only makes exercise a little less daunting but also encourages individuals to work out more regularly. There’s no need to splash out on an expensive gym membership because the workout can be performed in the comfort of your own home, saving time and money. The trend also requires little to no equipment, making starting out simple and without a significant financial investment.

Tune into your body

Cosy cardio allows you to focus on how your body feels rather than how many calories you've burnt or steps you've taken. This mindful approach can lead to improved mental wellbeing, as it allows you to be present in the moment and appreciate the physical and emotional benefits of movement.

How to get started with cosy cardio

Create a comfortable space

Designate a cosy and inviting workout space in your home and add any items that make you feel good, this could include soft blankets, pillows and soothing lighting to make the atmosphere more inviting. One of the best things about cosy cardio is that it can be performed anywhere, so switch on your favourite movie, TV show, or podcast and start moving your body.

Opt for enjoyable activities

Opt for activities you enjoy and find comfortable, such as walking or cycling. This could also include yoga, gentle stretching, or even dance. Keep things interesting by varying your activities. For example, try a new dance routine one day and a gentle yoga session the next.

Start small

Start with achievable goals and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your cosy workouts as your fitness level improves. Try not to put pressure on yourself to meet specific targets, the idea is to take a slower approach and find what works for you.

So, whether you're a seasoned fitness enthusiast or a beginner just starting out, incorporating cosy cardio into your daily routine is a simple yet effective way to stay active, all from the comfort of your own home.
