Coca Cola, Unilever, Nestle and many others have promised to reduce plastic pollution and increase recycling

Inspired by Sky’s Ocean Rescue campaign, 42 businesses, including some of the world’s most popular food and drink brands, have signed up to reduce plastic pollution.

Another 15 organisations have agreed to the targets set out by sustainability organisation WRAP in the UK Plastics Pact, which launched today.

WRAP explain the pact as “a trailblazing, collaborative initiative” that will “create a circular economy for plastics”. The pact aims to “bring together the entire plastics packaging value chain behind a common vision and ambitious set of targets”.

The not-for-profit group say the firms that have signed up so far are responsible for more than 80% of the plastic packaging sold through UK supermarkets. As a result, the goals listed in the pact, which WRAP admit are ambitious, must be achieved by 2025.

The targets include; eliminating single-use packaging and ensuring all plastic packaging used is to be reusable, recyclable or compostable.

Marcus Gover, Head of WRAP said, “Together, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to rethink and reshape the future of plastic so that we retain its value, and curtail the damage plastic wreaks on our planet.”

“This requires a transformation of the plastics system and can only be achieved by bringing together all links in the chain under a shared commitment to act. That is what makes the UK Plastics Pact unique.”

Announced today, firms are already showing their support.

The WRAP-led pact is the first of a global network of such pacts, enabled by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's New Plastics Economy initiative.
