If you feel like you're on a never-ending train journey without any stops, try these techniques to help you press pause and reset

In this article, Membership Services Executive at Happiful, Hannah, shares how we can take a moment to stop and reset.

Life has a way of speeding along at a hundred miles an hour. You may find yourself running on autopilot — ignoring the little niggles, aches and pains or feelings of low energy. If this is how you're feeling, pressing the rest button can be particularly important. Here are a few of Hannah's favourite ways to reset physically, emotionally, or mentally. We'll be running through Hannah's top five, but keep in mind there are many more and it's just a case of finding what's right for you.

In this video, Hannah walks us through her favourite techniques to help us reset.

Go for a walk

First up on Hannah's list is to go for a walk. There is a really good reason this comes up first and why you'll hear it from so many people. As well as warming up your muscles and lubricating your joints, walking will improve your breathing and the change in scenery and perspective is mentally stimulating. Even if it's only up and down some stairs or to the end of your garden and back, you'll feel the benefits.

Connect with a furry friend

Take a moment to connect with another living creature. Research from Washington State University clearly shows the positive impact a few minutes of stroking your furry friends can have on reducing stress. It's the physiological as well as the mood-enhancing benefits that make this so worthwhile and help you to feel ready to face the world again.

Listen to a podcast or audiobook

If you're struggling to find time to read, listening to a podcast or audiobook can be a really rewarding experience. You can do this while doing your chores, travelling or doing exercise. It might even turn some of those events into something you look forward to doing.

Connect with others

Message your friend or work colleague. Here at Happiful, whether we're in the office or working remotely, we regularly take time to pop a message across to another member of our team. It's just lovely to feel that instant connection and just think of the little dopamine hit the person receiving your message will get.

Create a break time ritual

Tip number five is to create a break time ritual. We would say tea break, but it's just as likely to be a fancy coffee or a five-fruit protein smoothie. This is going to be completely unique to you. What you're really looking to do is create a rewarding process and scene, something you look forward to as part of your daily routine.

Make sure you have your favourite mug ready and waiting. Give yourself permission to take your time, stop and breathe as the kettle boils. Take your time balancing the fruits in your smoothie and let the anticipation build as you set your coffee to froth. Consciously choose where you are going to sit. Maybe it's the comfiest chair or by the light in the kitchen window, and of course, make sure you appreciate and enjoy every minute. Now is not the time to answer your phone. This time is for you.

These five suggestions are quick and easy ways to change your mindset or shift your current state into a more positive direction. So just remember, you can stop the train at any time. You deserve a moment to reset. You won't regret it, and you'll enjoy the rewards.
