Whether you’re new to the area or just looking to build a social support network, here are some helpful talking points to make meaningful connections…

Community has been a buzzword in mental health spaces for some time now, with online and real-life groups coming together to raise awareness, signpost to support, and offer a sense of belonging to those in need. But in light of recent political and societal shifts, the need for community has been felt more broadly and deeply, as government systems of support become unreliable, inaccessible, and in some cases, erased entirely.

Community serves as a fundamental pillar of human wellbeing, offering profound benefits that extend beyond mere social interaction. Communities also help with practical resource-sharing, making services more accessible and affordable while fostering a culture of mutual aid. The sense of belonging that emerges from community participation contributes significantly to happiness and mental wellbeing, and research suggests that it may even contribute to longevity.

Yet so many of us lack confidence in creating and sustaining a community. Here are 10 conversation starters designed to support genuine community building:

1. What's something you're looking forward? - This open-ended question invites others to talk about themselves in an uplifting way, and can help you get to know each other.

2. If you could change something about our community, what would it be? - Encourage collaborative thinking and problem-solving with a neighbour or coworker.

3. What's the best pub/cafe/charity shop around here? - People love to give recommendations! This can facilitate the sharing of local knowledge and highlight areas where you already both visit.

4. What skill could you teach someone else? - This offers a chance for people to swap skills and knowledge, which is a beautiful value exchange and costs nothing.

5. What's a tradition from your culture that you love? - Communities are diverse, so this prompts a deeper understanding and appreciation among members.

6. When was the last time you felt supported by someone? - This might highlight positive interactions that already exist and give you a better idea of how to support others.

7. What's one small thing that would make your day better right now? - Creates immediate opportunities for people to help each other in manageable ways.

8. What book, TV show, or podcast has influenced your thinking lately? - This simple question can lead to thoughtful discussions about ideas and values.

9. What kinds of community events would you attend? - This directly involves people in community building and empowers them to be the change they want to see.

10. What's something you're struggling with that others might be able to help with? - When done sensitively, holding space for vulnerability can establish mutual support.
