Named as a runner-up in the Happiful Poetry Prize 2025, Leeonie Mignott reveals the origins of her shortlisted poem
‘Drum Kit’ by Leeonie Mignott was named as one of the shortlisted poems in the Happiful Poetry Prize 2025. Here, Leeonie opens up about why she chose to use music as a metaphor.
What drew you to enter the Happiful Poetry Prize?
As a new poet and author, I wanted to challenge myself and see how far I could grow creatively. I haven’t had many opportunities to explore different writing styles or techniques, and this competition felt like the perfect way to do that.
Having experienced challenges such as anxiety and depression, I have found writing to be a way to transform my feelings, thoughts, and perceptions into something meaningful to share with others.
Could you tell us a little about the poem you submitted?
'Drum Kit' explores the “heartbeats” you follow through the mind of someone experiencing an anxiety or panic attack. It can strike suddenly or build gradually until it inevitably subsides.
More than anything, my poetry comes from the heart
I used the image of a drum kit as a kind of mirage – each element mirroring the timing, rhythm, and sensations I’ve felt during those moments. My dad is a drummer, so I drew on my familiarity with his instrument to capture both the technical precision and the emotional intensity in the piece.
When writing poetry, where do you find your inspiration?
I often draw inspiration from the environment around me, tuning into what I see, hear, smell, taste, and feel in the moment.
For me, it’s about capturing an honest, unfiltered spark before it fades
I also lean into whatever thoughts or emotions I’m experiencing at that time – sometimes it’s sparked by a single word, and other times it’s simply a feeling I can’t ignore. More than anything, my poetry comes from the heart.
How do you approach writing a new poem?
That’s a great question. I usually start with the very first thought or image that comes to mind. I don’t like to over-plan beforehand. I want the poem to grow directly from my feelings in that moment, without being shaped by outside influences. For me, it’s about capturing an honest, unfiltered spark before it fades.
What advice would you give to aspiring poets?
Keep going! Never think that you or your work is not good enough!
