Clinical Hypnotherapist Fiona Lamb shares her thoughts on hypnotherapy and sleep challenges on I am. I have - How It Helps

Highly acclaimed clinical hypnotherapist Fiona Lamb joined Happiful’s I am. I have - How It Helps to talk about hypnotherapy and how it can help with sleep challenges.

Fiona explains how she started having hypnotherapy over ten years ago, when she was experiencing problems with sleeping herself. She was so impressed by the positive impact it had on her, that she committed to training to become a hypnotherapist herself.

With discussions about mental health and practises around wellbeing becoming more commonplace, Fiona shares that there has been an increase in interest around hypnotherapy and how it can help.

However, she is aware that there are still some misconceptions around the therapy, and she seeks to address this throughout the podcast.

You are in control all the time and it helps you gain control in the parts of your brain you previously didn’t have control over

Fiona explains that hypnotherapy, in the way she practises it, is more like a meditation, with some work around addressing the right (emotional) side of the brain. “I think people’s biggest fear is that they will lose control,” she shares. “But you are in control all the time and it helps you gain control in the parts of your brain you previously didn’t have control over.”

“People underestimate the power of our conscious mind but it influences so much of what we do and we are a product of everything that has ever happened to us. Hypnotherapy allows us to work with the unconscious parts of the mind and the parts that consciously, you’re not aware of. It’s nothing to be scared of.”

Moving onto thoughts of sleep challenges, something that Fiona has personal experience of. “I really sympathise when people come into my office and say they can’t sleep, the first thing I say is ‘oh my goodness, let’s get you sleeping!’ I know how frustrating and debilitating it can be, and how it affects your entire life.”

Explaining that the lack of sleep is usually caused by a type of anxiety, Fiona shares that she didn’t know that she was experiencing anxiety herself when she first addressed her own sleeping issues - and often part of the therapy process is identifying underlying thought proccesses that may be making sleep difficult.

Noting that everyone is different, Fiona talks about working on a case by case basis but reassures listeners that positive change around sleep issues with hypnotherapy, is very possible, if you are willing to commit to the process and trust the therapist.
